Move the Mast

Eir wants to construct a 15m mast adjacent to schools and homes in Cloughjordan. We say ‘No’.

A village is no place for a 5G mast

Eir’s plan to erect a mast in the heart of our community and adjacent to our schools and homes is unacceptable.

The proposed placement of this mast demonstrates that Eir don’t care about our community, our children, or about meaningful consultation with stakeholders.

As concerned citizens, we intend to denounce, litigate, and take action against this plan until Eir agree to MOVE THE MAST.

Make a donation

To take a judicial review, the school must work with an environmental law solicitor. We urgently need to raise funds for this campaign, and you can help by donating at GoFundMe.com/MovetheMast.

Attend our events

We’ll keep putting pressure on Eir through a series of rallies, protests, and fundraisers. Join us. If Eir sees us united in opposition, they’ll know Cloughjordan can’t be steamrolled by corporate greed.

Eir’s mast is illegal

We’re working with environmental solicitors FP Logue to submit a judicial review against An Bord Pleanala for approving Eir’s mast because it:

Contravenes the Tipperary Development Plan

Tipperary’s Development Plan specifically states that it will not place masts near schools or homes unless as a last resort. The site next to the school is not a last resort. In fact, no other site has been considered by Eir or TowerComm. They own the old exchange site and have no interest in looking elsewhere.

Undermine’s the school’s duty of care

St. Michael’s NS has a duty to protect the health and safety of the children who attend. Scientists in the US and beyond will swear affidavits stating that the effects of a 5G mast near a school are still unknown, and without stronger evidence of their safety, the proximity to the school means the board of management cannot perform its duty.

History & strategy

Background

In 2021, Eir and TowerComm – an organisation which has purchased utility plots from Eir throughout Ireland – requested planning permission for a 15-meter mast at the old exchange site, adjacent to St. Michael’s National School in Cloughjordan.

It was approved by the Tipperary County Council – despite being in direct opposition to Tipperary’s Development Plan. This decision was struck down on appeal to An Bord Pleannala by the school Board of Management.

Eir resubmitted a planning application in 2023, and Tipperary Council Council awarded it again. But this time, the school’s appeal to An Bord Pleannala was rejected and the mast was approved.

Judicial Review

The St. Michael’s NS school board of management, with the help of Eoin Brady of FP Logue, have requested a judicial review of An Bord Pleanala’s decision.

A court hearing date will be set, and in the meantime, An Bord Pleanala will decide whether they intend to contest our judicial review or concede that they made a mistake and reassess the mast’s placement.

In the meantime, we intend to hold rallies, meetings, fundraisers, and protests, and we hope you’ll join as many of these as you can. Attending campaign events (and donating funds, if possible, to pay for the judicial review) will help show Eir and TowerComm that Cloughjordan is united in rejecting their mast.
